1. Next Forum Meeting:

2. Hackney Museum

We have arranged a trip to the BODY TALK exhibit that Disability Backup have been involved in designing.

When? Thursday 5th August 11am
Where? Hackney Museum, 1 Reading Lane (next to Hackney Town Hall)

3. Brighton Trip

Visit to the Federation of Disabled People in Brighton

Disability Backup is arranging a one off visit to Brighton to meet with a similar project, 'Get Involved Group'.

We have 24 places available; cost to Disability Backup Members will be £5 (to cover lunch and transport).

When? Tuesday 17th August 11pm-6pm (approx)

Trip includes:
  • Minibus drive to Brighton
  • Lunch in Brighton
  • Meeting with 'Get Involved Group'
  • Drive back to Hackney
Places on a first come first serve basis.

4. Site visit to the Olympic Park

As requested at the last Forum Meeting, We have been invited on a tour of the Olympic Park.

There are 25 spaces and 2 wheelchair spaces available

When? Friday 20th August 2-4pm
Where? Outside Stratford Station.

Members must be able to make their own way to Stratford Station, we recommend taking the over ground from Dalston.

6. Leisure Report

Please see Disability Backup's report on swimming pools in Hackney. We have presented this report to Hackney Council and GLL and have made 14 recommendations. Thank you to all who have been involved in the making of this report.


7. Choice in Hackney Gardening Service

Choice in Hackney Volunteer Project has two keen gardeners offering free service to disabled people living in Hackney.

If you need help with maintaining your garden and you have basic gardening tools the volunteers can make your garden beautiful in no time. It can be either one-off or regular maintenance.

Get in touch now, we will accept clients on a first come first served basis.

8. Parking update

Did you know Parking Services also provide a rapid response enforcement unit for cases where urgent enforcement is required.

This can be requested via the Hackney Service Centre on 020 8356 8877 between 8:00 and 20:00 hours Monday-Friday and between 09:00 and 13:00 hours on Saturdays. for all council enquiries and payments.

Outside these hours, please contact the Car Pound on 020 8356 7555. Hackney say they will do our best to meet as many requests as possible but regret that, as a result of the constraints under which we operate we are unable to guarantee that every single request will be met at all times.

Be aware that the Payment centre in Hillman Street is not open on a Saturday. For anyone wanting to travel to the renew their Companion badge, pay a parking fine or any other payments the days of opening are Monday - Friday 8.00 AM - 5.00 PM only.

Options available are do it on line at www.hackney.gov.uk to Renew your Parking Permit and to make payments online or apply for a resident parking permit and telephone the Hackney Service Centre on Saturday from 9.00 am - 1.00pm


9. Deaf Plus Event

What is Tinnitus?
We have a deaf speaker, Andrew Goodwin and Sanjeev Thiara who will come to talk about tinnitus. They will explain what tinnitus is and will answer your questions. Tea and biscuits will be provided.

When? - Tuesday 10th / August 2010
Time? - 10am to 12pm
Where? - Mare Street Hostel, 146 Mare Street, Hackney, London, E8 3SG

10. The Big Lunch

Come and share lunch with other local people!
When? Sunday 18th July 2-4pm
Where? The Old Fire Station, Brooke Road (on the corner of Brooke road and Stoke Newington High Street)
What? Bring your own lunch and meet new people in your community


11. Changes to office staff

Catherine will be taking Maternity Leave from the 20th August. Her role will be covered by existing staff in the organisation who have previously been involved in Disability Backup's work.
