Feedback from Forum Meeting
We had a lively meeting with 27 people attending. We heard from London Sports Forum and Hackney Homes. Please see January's minutes

We have committed to re starting our leisure focus group to tackle the issues that have been raised about access to leisure services in Hackney.

We have also agreed to talk about Aids and Adaptations at a future forum meeting this year.

The group discussed topics they would like to cover this year.

Topics for this year:

  • Scope Campaigns
  • Finding out more about Forum Members, what skills do we all have?
  • Hackney Homes- adaptations and Choice lettings
  • Customer care at Hackney Council
  • Accessible Transport
  • Planning and consultation with Hackney

Service First Centre Feedback
In January, some members visited the new Service Centre. Overall it is an impressive building with many accessible features. We were however disappointed that the waiting area did not have mixed seating and many of us found it to be too low. We were also disappointed that there was not a 'changing spaces' toilet, which was discussed at previous meetings.

At the request of members, Catherine wrote a letter of complaint about this. We have been assured by Mike that they will invest in higher seating before the centre opens and that they are in discussions with architects regarding the changing places toilet. Catherine will publish Mike's reply once we receive it.

Note to speakers
In the future; to make sure our meetings are as useful as possible, all speakers coming to a Forum Meeting will be sent these points.
  • This group is primarily interested in disability issues, all presentations should focus on Consulting the group and the implications for disabled people in Hackney. Too wide an overview of your work cuts down the time for effective consultation through questions and answers, so succinct presentation is vital.
  • This group expect changes to occur from your attendance at the meeting. By this we mean that you take on board some action points and will inform us in the future of how these have been realised or taken forward. Future involvement may mean setting up a working party or members joining an existing group to effect change.
  • This group is made up of disabled people, each with different access needs. Please make your information accessible. PowerPoint presentations are not a viable option for this group. Therefore please ensure hand outs are discussed with Catherine at least a week before so that you are in a position to provide suitable material. We operate under the social model of disability and therefore expect appropriate language and minimal use of jargon.
  • We are very happy to assist you in your presentation to make the meeting as enjoyable as possible for everyone.
Please contact Catherine to add anything to this.

Scope's Campaign Network
People in all walks of life campaign for all sorts of reasons, from changing the law to changing people's minds, campaigning can influence the way people behave or even what they believe. You can campaign to change policies and practices or to change the environment in which you live.

The disability organisation Scope has set up local campaign training and its support project was set up in January 2009. The project recognises that while national issues are often of concern to disabled people it can be the smaller localised issues such as where a dropped kerb is placed that can have the most affect on people's day to day lives. The project is designed to support local people to make the most of the opportunities campaigning offers to improve the area in which they live.

Do you have a passion for campaigning and want to share your ideas with us?

If so we want to hear from you.
Why not become a campaign champion? as an individual or as a group member.
